Mecal Pro (International Short Film and Animation Festival of Barcelona)

Since 1998, the Mecal, the International Festival of Short Films and Animation of Barcelona, ​​offers annually a curated program of the best shorts of the national and international scene with five official sections: international, documentary, animation, oblique and video clip. In addition to screenings that include a wide variety of themes and genres, a large number of parallel activities are organized.

This year is celebrated from March 28 to April 14. But the Mecal doesn’t only last the days that the festival is celebrated: it lasts all the year, since Barcelona welcomes round tables, contests, workshops, masterclasses and days dedicated to the short film of animation and, that exports outside the Catalan borders through of different initiatives.

This year the festival has a selection of more than 350 short films from 40 countries. The festival is structured in three weeks, each one around a different genre:

  • From the 28 to the 31 of March the week of the animation is celebrated. The MACBA is full of animated short films, with 6 competition sessions and several parallels. It is also organized, thanks to the collaboration with NonStop Barcelona Animació, a series of masterclasses and workshops.
  • From the 4th to the 7th of April the Fiction Week is celebrated in the French Institute of Barcelona. It will have 7 sessions of the International Selection to compete the most innovative works. There will also be other parallel sections such as “Catalan Talents”. On the other hand, during this same week, the Short Film Market will be organized at the Movistar Center.
  • From the 11 to the 14 of April the week of the Documentary in Arts of Santa Monica is celebrated. The week will be taken by 5 sessions of documentary competition and other parallel on current political and social issues such as ecology, immigration, sexuality or the Womart. They will also have different conferences and workshops, such as networking for documentary professionals. Also, this week will celebrate the “Freak day”, which includes sections of Terror, Science Fiction and Sex.

As usual, Mecal will dedicate a space of his programming to the best short films of a guest country. This year, Estonia will be the star of 4 programs distributed during the Animation week. You can enjoy the best Estonian short films of recent years and different related activities.
